Queanbeyan United Hockey Club acknowledges that quality umpiring has a significant impact on the enjoyment and experience of the greater hockey community, and is fully committed to the education and development of the clubs umpires.

The club supports pathways to Level 1 and Level 2 accreditation through the National Accreditation program run by Hockey Australia, with the support of Hockey ACT to provide accreditation assessments and information sessions.

Queanbeyan’s umpires are also looking to engage with Hockey ACT to provide mentoring as part of the Joeys program, which encourages the development of the junior umpires throughout the year.

Visit our training and development page to learn more about these programs.

Appreciation

The club's umpiring coordinator performs a vital role in ensuring that allocated mandatory team commitments are met each season. If these allocations are not fulfilled it usually attract penalties for both the club in monetary charges and the team in championship points.

The club umpire's responsibility is also not an easy one and though most are compensated in some form; their resilience, zest and dedication must be recognised and applauded by every club member; especially by players.

Over the years our umpires have always demonstrated these qualities and many have performed far beyond our expectations. Accordingly, to all umpires who have contributed someway each eason we salute and thank you for your contributions.

This season the QUHC will be introducing an initiative to encourage players appreciate the effort umpires contribute each weekend. Players will be asked to shadow their team’s umpire for a game or two in the hope that the experience may adjust attitudes towards umpiring officials.

This new initiative also embodies a pathway to developing our umpire base for the future begining with community level accreditation, L1 and beyond.

So if the experience inspires players to become an umpire then those players will be mentored accordingly and paid when assigned as a controlling umpire.

If however, the experience only serves as an exercise of awareness to the challenges umpires endure then we hope player gratitude towards umpires is enhanced.

As the season progresses, Team Managers will provide player names to the club’s Umpire Development | Coordinator who will then roster into the umpiring schedule; rostered Team Umpires will remind their Shadow Players of assignments as required.

We are an endorsed ‘GOOD SPORTS’ club and with this comes the responsibility for members to respect every player and official of our game.

HEAR NO EVIL

Queanbeyan United Hockey Club aspires to be a growing educational-hockey organization that provides a quality
experience to every athlete. A quality experience is one in which every athlete:

  • Is coached using the principles of Positive Coaching
  • Has fun at practices and games
  • Feels like an important part of the team regardless of performance
  • Learns “life lessons” that have value beyond the playing field
  • Learns the skills, tactics and strategies of the game and improves as a player.

We recognize that coaches are the people who most directly make this all possible. It is our goal to provide every coach with the tools to succeed as a Positive Coach as they are very often volunteers. We are committed to creating a positive culture, in which coaches, parents, fans, officials and athletes work together to achieve this outcome.

SPEAK NO EVIL

The Queanbeyan United Hockey Club’s (QUHC) team managers are responsible for the QUHC teams upholding the HockeyACT/club policies and requirements during the season. These include ensuring:

  • Players are properly registered with the club;
  • Transfer clearances are approved (check with registrar) before rostering players;
  • Players adhere to the QUHC's code of conduct;
  • Sufficient number of players present for each game;
  • Players wear correct club uniform;
  • Team umpiring commitments are fulfilled and umpires are promptly paid;
  • OneSport details are accurately updated within the designated timeframe set by HockeyACT;
  • Players are financial to the club each month; and
  • QUHC fundraising commitments are fulfilled when required.

We acknowldge that team managers perform a crucial yet often thankless task in keeping our teams moving both on and off the field. It is this dedicated effort which makes the QUHC's administrators task a little easier and we greatly appreciate their role in the club.

THINK NO EVIL

The Queanbeyan United Hockey Club (QUHC) committee members are elected from the rank and file of the club and hence are there to represent the club and players.

Much work is carried out behind the scenes by the committee to ensure that the QUHC remains a viable and vibrant sporting club. Work such as representing QUHC at the many ACT Hockey meetings, ensuring the funds within the club remain in the black, chasing up sponsorship, co-ordinating fundraising, organising presentation nights and recruiting players for both senior and junior teams are just some of the many activities the committee carry out.
