Presidents Perspective

Queanbeyan United Hockey Club (QUHC) had a very promising year.

2018 saw QUHC enter the same number of teams as we did in 2018, but we saw the u11 boys move up to the u13 competition.

Our SL1W had a rewarding season by winning 6 games, after not winning a game in the last 2 seasons. One of the reasons why the women played well was that they had a new coach in Shayne Monahan. Thanks Shayne for coaching and Lara for managing the team.

SL3W had a hard year as they couldn’t keep the same team on the field each week through injury or by having players help out in SL1W. It was great to see the team participate in the annual Pink Weekend by buying new pink playing shirts and raising $140 for Breast Cancer. Thanks to Heidi Moses for coaching and managing the team.

SL2M had a strong season by taking out the Minor Premiership. They went all the way to the Grand Final but lost to Central. Thanks Shayne Monahan for coaching and Will Unwin for managing the team.

SL3M went through the season only losing 1 game and taking out the Minor Premiership. The team made it all the way to the Grand Final only to lose to Central in the Grand Final. Thanks Kris Jobe for coaching and John Michael (Bunji) for managing the team.

SL4M finished the season in 2nd place on the ladder after the rounds were finished. They also made the Grand Final and beat the Minor Premiers, Wests, to take out the Premiership. Thanks to Jayde Michael for looking after the team.

QUHC continued to field 2 Master’s teams in the local Monday night competition. This is an all year competition.

QUHC junior boys’ team went from u11 in 2017 up to u13 this year. The competition was a lot harder than last year, but the team made the semis this year.  Thanks again to Shayne Monahan for looking after the team.

We also had a joint team in u13 girls with TVHC. This was a strong team that went on to win the premiership. Thanks to TVHC for looking after the team.

Hin2H was once again held at Blundell Park with Rachel Howden running the centre with the help of a few committee members.  This year saw Hin2H centres throughout Canberra visit each other every couple of weeks. By visiting the other centres, it gave the players a chance to play against different opposition.

Thanks Wayne Gartner, Will Unwin, Bob Parks, Trever Ovington, Shayne Monahan and Heidi Moses for umpiring this season just gone.

The club finished the year still in a strong financial position, with thanks to chocolate fundraising and support from our sponsors, The Royal Hotel and GUIMonster.  This year we didn’t receive any sponsorship from Queanbeyan Leagues Club or Kookaburra.

This year’s presentation night was held at The Royal Hotel in their newly opened function room upstairs. The turnout for the night was great with about 80 people attending.

Overall QUHC appears to be in a very positive position with regard to finance and player numbers for the 2019 season.

I would also like to say congratulations to Rachel Howden (Junior Club Person) and Shayne Monahan (Senior Club Person)

Last but not least, a big thank you to the committee for all the help you have given me and the club though out the year.

Mark Unwin,
President

Our Scene

Queanbeyan United is a Queanbeyan-based field hockey club, with teams participating in all facets of the HockeyACT local competition, including mixed Hookin2 Hockey, junior girl's and senior women's and men's competitions.

Hookin2 Hockey

Hookin2 Hockey (formerly known as Minkey) is a modified form of hockey for beginners, both boys and girls, from 4 to 9 years of age. Queanbeyan United Hockey Club Hookin2Hockey teams play on Blundell Park in Queanbeyan on Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 11:00 during the winter hockey season (May to September).

Juniors

Most Junior girls and boys teams play on Saturday mornings on turf fields located in Canberra and depending on the number of teams in the competition some are played on Friday nights. Teams playing on grass may have some games scheduled at Blundell Park in Queanbeyan.

Seniors

The Capital and State Leagues Men's games are played on Saturdays and women's on Sundays on turf fields at the National Hockey Centre, Lyneham and the Tuggeranong Hockey Park, Tuggeranong.

The Men's Canberra Cup Midweek games are played mainly on Friday nights with the ocasional game played on Wednesday nights. The games are scheduled for 19:30 or 20:40 time slots also on turf fields at Lyneham and Tuggeranong.

Twilight

Queanbeyan United Hockey Club also has teams competing in the summer twilight (mixed men and women) and indoor (girl's and women's) hockey competitions.

HockeyACT

Hockey ACT released it's Strategic Plan 2012-2015, in early 2015, reinforcing the Board's committment to provide opportunities for rewarding and inclusive participation for individuals at all levels in the ACT region.  Hockey ACT's Strategic Plan clearly defines the key objectives and core values of Hockey ACT in it's dealing with members.

ACT Masters

ACT Masters Hockey fosters hockey as a vigorous team based sport that can be enjoyed well into one's senior years. This age group commences at 35 years to a less defined focus on the upper-bound.

Regular Monday evening competition is organised throughout the year and the number of teams involved varies depending on the season. Whilst most games are played at the National Hockey Centre, Lyneham at 19:30 or 20:30pm with an occasional 9:30pm slot some games are scheduled for Tuggeranong and Goulburn if teams from these centres are involved.

Queanbeyan United Hockey Club has two teams (Bulls and Phoenix) participating in this competition every year.

BENEFITS MEMBERS

Fundraising

Fundraising is a mandatory and vital part of the QUHC’s development and growth; and accordingly registered members must contribute to our fundraising activities in some way. Various fundraising activities and drives are planned for this season and these include chocolate and slice drives, raffles, Bunnings BBQs and social nights.

Our aim is to ensure we are able to better furnish our financial obligations, provide members with affordable fees and subsidise club events.

Chocolate Drive

Hockey can be expensive especially with the maintenance of sticks, uniforms safety equipment and footwear. Add fees to these and unfortunately it becomes a sport out of reach for some.

To assist in its affordability, the club conducts chocolate drives during the season. Usually each team is awarded boxes of chocolates to sell but non-team members are also more than welcome to participate by simply volunteering.

Where do the raised funds go? Towards keeping our fees low, training, general administration and award trinkets for the end of year presentation night.

Team managers will be advised when the drive is due and we encourage you all to embrace this event.

Bunnings BBQ

The Bunnings BBQ is a very popular activity and is heavily sought after by many organisations in Canberra due to its profitability. This can be a busy activity so the roster is usually structured for a minimum of three (3) members on a hourly basis.

The date of this activity is determined by a lottery so we don't really know when we will be scheduled until a few weeks before it’s due. We may only have one shot at this but the rewards are definitely worth the effort.

Team managers will be advised in advance regarding their member quota for the roster and they are responsible for ensuring that their allocation is fulfilled.

This activity is normally held on a Saturday or Sunday at Bunnings (Fyshwick) between 09:00 - 15:00.

If you have any fundraising ideas or are able to assist with planning, please contact
the committee - go to the officials page for contact details.
